The History of Log Cabins

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

When you think of log cabins, is surely to think of them as a country, and identify with rural America, but in fact originated in Europe and Scandinavia. Records show that the first was built in 3500BC in northern Europe. When Europeans settled in this country had a long history of use of house searches. The settlers built log cabin for the first time in 1638. Having the records stacked one above the other, and made interlocking notched corners to the ends. The style of the notches had to do with the ethnic origin of the settlers. Some strains were nailed together. Engravings or nailing provided a strong base, and settlers filled the cracks between the logs with moss, clay or other soft substances, known as “tinkle.”

In the coldest part of the country, keeping the house warm was of utmost importance, and it was found that the wood has had a solid quality of isolation, wood frame construction covered with tiles or animal skins. In the coming years, the joints have been improved to be more tight, but the logs were still used. A wooden hut has become very popular as pioneers settled in the north and in Canada, due to inclement weather.

When the car was important that is. Sunlight would be available, and we must have proper drainage. The early pioneers had their selection of the best straight trunks of mature trees, and short limbs. This meant that the record should not be cut to fit together properly. They chose to rule that the records of the length of one wall. The farther the source of wood, the lowest in the cabin. Rocks were used to support the thresholds and, over the sill and corners. The rocks were also used as bases for maintaining wet booths, and provide a place for storage. The bark is often used for roofs and building was a rafter in the roof, which has been records that have been carved in the wall of logs.

In 1787 the Academy of Pittsburgh began as a log cabin. According to the Pittsburgh historian Agnes Lynch Starrett, there is “abundant evidence that the classes were held in a log building, even before the Charter was granted.”

Not many eighteenth century houses are still alive, but were not built for permanent residence. When the settlers built bigger houses, cottages have been relegated to serve as holding centers, cooperatives, or even chicken or dog houses. During the Depression, the Civilian Conservation Corps built houses in the west to the Forest Service and National Park Service. In 1930, the largest cabin in the world was built in Montebello, Quebec, Canada and became the Chateau Montebello hotel.

In the 20th century had booths 2×4 beams and sheets covered with cedar shingles. In rural areas due to lack of woodwork, ceilings were covered with tiles belt that had long been divided by the hand. In the Midwest and parts of houses in Canada were covered with tiles, and cabins in the nineteenth century had internal plaster. In Illinois, the Illinois Historical Society is a historical site of 86-acres that contains an accurate representation of the two-room house Abraham Lincoln. E ‘was built in 1935 on the original site of the Lincoln cabin Conservation Corps as a civilian project.

European modern houses are often built in gardens to be used as a summer residence, office or a room addition. In this country today, the kits can be purchased for the construction of a fantasy log cabin, and the manufacturers of these devices consume most of the logs in the American West.
